Jen's life of partying and sneaking out has grown stale. So on a whim, Jen makes a bet to turn Trevor, a goody-two-shoes geek, into a "bad boy." As she hangs out with Trevor, however, she finds it's actually kinda fun being a geek. But when Trevor finds out about the bet, Jen must fight for the things she's discovered matter most: friendship, family, and, above all, love.

I was pleasantly surprised by Geek Girl.

The book may seem to fall into the category of your typical run of the mill contemporary young adult novels that tell the story of an unexpected high school romance. For sure, there are plenty of similar elements to be had. The main characters (and the ones that wind up involved in a romantic situation) are definitely typical: the geek and the goth, both clearly defined by how they dress, their attitudes and even the activities they enjoy doing. The story also starts with a bet, a plot device used by many films that cover the same sort of story employ, especially when it refers to a sort of transformation of a person.

But, despite the many similarities and even the fairly predictable ending, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's probably because a part of me always roots for two characters that I genuinely like to be together and because I am definitely a sucker for happy endings and sweet romantic moments.

Trevor and Jennifer are both characters that I liked reading about. Trev, in my imagination, was definitely a hot geek -- and since that is just my type, I found that I was constantly swooning over his words, his actions and even his character. Jen, on the other hand, is definitely a little more complex. I thought I wouldn't like her at first, but getting to know her and finally getting a chance to understand her family history and background definitely changed my mind. And when she started - well, I honestly shouldn't say or it'll spoil it - but I just ended up feeling for her.

Their love story was the slightest bit typical, but I still thought it was very sweet. I was touched and emotionally affected during several moments in the story and it was enough to convince me that I should find a geek of my own to love. Geek Girl is a cute, quick read and I can't wait to read more from this author.

  1. This really does sound cute! I am one of those people who can guess the ending and major plot points to a lot of books and films and even if they are typical an for lack of a better word, unoriginal, I still like a lot of them. I think what set books and movies apart (that have the similar themes) are definitely the characters and how you can relate to them and the growth they have throughout the story. Adding this to goodreads as well!
